Position : SMT Operator The SMT Operator is responsible for both automated surface and manual surface mount manufacturing. Assist with set-up, operation, and adjustment of SMT equipment. Monitors and maintains equipment to meet company standards. May be responsible for quality assurance and documentation. Reports to the PCBA Lead/Supervisor and works under moderate supervision within the Senior SMT Operators and Manufacturing Engineering group. Responsibilities Demonstrates knowledge, safety, and operation of SMT equipment by following written work instructions, equipment manuals, and verbal instructions. Familiar with Surface-Mount Technology (SMT) components and assembly process. Learn the principles of ESD and apply ESD/MSD precautions in material handling. Complete various Production and Quality control logs. Read and comprehend a Bill of Materials (BOM). Operate automated SMT assembly equipment (e.g., Stencil Printer, Pick and Place Machine, Reflow Oven, AOI, Storage Towers, stencil wash). Specific machine training provided. Read area procedures within a reasonable time. Report issues with area equipment and processes in a timely manner; complete Trouble Reports. Develop understanding of SMT feeder and tape sizes, feeder/tape pitches. Follow PCB assemblies through process and report discrepancies to Supervisor, line lead, or SMT technician. Develop component identification knowledge and properly pick components from stock to set up and reload feeders. Perform visual inspections of SMT assemblies as indicated by BOMs and visual aids. Run SMT assembly and AOI equipment, including startup, loading recipes, error resolution, adjustments, production runs, and shutdown. Sort and segregate good units from failed AOI assemblies; unload finished assemblies and store according to work instructions. Maintain general machine cleaning and upkeep based on PM schedules. Use hand tools and maintain a neat work area; practice safe work habits and report unsafe conditions. Qualifications Ability to read and write in English to work from BOMs, visual aids, assembly drawings, work instructions, and to complete production/Quality Control logs. SMT soldering ability including minor touch-up, repair/replacement of fine-pitch parts. Ability to use a microscope to verify component placement, orientation, and fine-pitch repairs. Willingness to operate machines and learn processes beyond the normal SMT scope. Basic computer skills and comfort with Microsoft Windows and Excel; familiarity with various machine interfaces (GUIs). Ability to interpret and resolve error messages from varied machines. General knowledge of manufacturing processes, electronics, and ability to read/interprete assembly prints and follow visual aids and written work instructions. Ability to work with speed and accuracy and follow verbal instructions; effective communication with co-workers. Visual acuity to read prints, part numbers, and interpret color codes on wires and components. Education and Experience High school diploma or GED 6 months to 2 years of experience in SMT Physical Requirements While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit, stand, walk, talk, and hear. Must be able to use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects; reach with arms and hands; and occasionally lift up to 50 pounds with proper lifting techniques. Specific vision abilities include close, distance, color, peripheral, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
